TMR Hall Effect Eliminates Drift

How TMR Hall Effect Technology Works

Traditional joysticks use physical contact; TMR uses magnetism. In a TMR sensor, a thin film of insulating material is sandwiched between two ferromagnetic layers. As the joystick moves, a magnet changes its position relative to these layers. This triggers "quantum tunneling" of electrons through the insulator, creating a change in electrical resistance that is translated into precise movement data.

Why TMR is Better than Traditional "ALPS" Joysticks

  • Zero Physical Wear: Traditional ALPS sticks use carbon-based potentiometers where a metal wiper physically rubs against a surface. This friction eventually scrapes away the material, causing "drift." TMR sensors have no touching parts, meaning they virtually never wear out.
  • Higher Precision: TMR sensors provide a much higher signal-to-noise ratio than standard Hall Effect sensors, allowing for "raw" circularity tests with 0.1% error rates.
  • .6-.9% Sweet Spot: I use K-Silver JS13 Pro + Joysticks because they are reliable and also stay between the sweet spot for Video Game controller calibration.
  • Lower Power Consumption: TMR technology requires significantly less voltage than original Hall Effect sensors, which is critical for maintaining long battery life in wireless controllers like the DualSense or Switch Joy-Cons.
  • No Deadzones: Because the sensors are so stable, manufacturers can set the "inner deadzone" to zero, providing an instantaneous response in competitive shooters.

Our Repair Services

As of mid-2026, the gaming industry has shifted significantly toward TMR (Tunnel Magnetoresistance) Hall Effect sensors to eliminate the dreaded "stick drift" that plagued previous console generations. Unlike standard Hall Effect sensors, TMR technology offers higher precision and lower power consumption, making it the new gold standard for high-end controllers.
